Personal Finance: 5 Tips To Rein In Your Spending | Marijuana for ...

Use your favorite credit cards regularly if you don?t want to lose them. Credit card companies may close or reduce credit limit on inactive or unprofitable accounts without advance notice, which may negatively affect your finances in the future. Use them regularly and pay off the balances to stay out of debt.

You may want to consider buying generic products when you are shopping if you want to save money. Many generic products have the exact same quality as brand names do and you will be saving tons of money by purchasing them. You can buy generics for just about everything you need.

Take the habit of carrying cash with you or get a debit card. Use this method of payment for your small expenses. If you use a credit card for all your expenses, you will end up paying a lot of money in interests and perhaps lose track of how much you spend everyday.

Diversify your investments using mutual funds. It?s difficult and expensive for a small investor to create a diversified portfolio using individual securities, but a no-load mutual fund can provide instant diversification at low cost. You can invest as little as $1000 in a fund that holds anywhere from 20 to several hundred securities, for an annual fee as low as 1%. Diversification helps to lower investment risk by reducing dependence on any one security to provide a favorable return.

It is important to know who, where, what, when and how, about each agency that reports on your credit history. If you do not follow up with each reporter on your credit file, you could be leaving a mistaken account reference on your history, that could easily be taken care of with a phone call.

Before investing any money into anything, make sure that you have paid off all of your significant debts. You do not want to put any money into risky ventures while your debt is continuing to grow. Pay down those outstanding bills first, and then you can think about investing.

If one is concerned about saving money for their personal finance then they should consider buying only essential items. By not purchasing unneeded things a person can make the most of their money and save what they have remaining from purchasing their needed items. This will allow one to build their personal finance.

Eat out less often. By making dinner at home and eating there instead of at various restaurants, you can save quite a bit of money. Restaurants charge quite a bit, and you can have the same thing at home for a lot less money and a lot less calories.

If you have a full time job, the most logical way to improve your financial situation is to do your best to be next in line for a promotion. A raise in salary, not only helps you for the current year, but for all the years in the future.

Nurture your career, for maximum efficiency with personal finance. Since your work is where you generate your money, it should be your number one priority to take care of. If your career is suffering, then everything down the chain will suffer as well. So make sure that you are keeping your career ranked above all other investments.

Look into a better plan for your cell phone. Chances are if you have had your cell phone for at least a couple of years, there is probably something out there that will benefit you more. Call your provider and ask for a better deal, or look around and see what is being offered.

Improve your personal finance skills with a very useful but often overlooked tip. Make sure that you are taking about 10-13% of your paychecks and putting them aside into a savings account. This will help you out greatly during the tough economic times. Then, when an unexpected bill comes, you will have the funds to cover it and not have to borrow and pay interest fees.

One way to secure your financial future is, to buy a home. Buying a home is the best investment you can ever make.
During this economic period, it will reap you even higher returns than usual in the future. Be sure to put as much down as you can to save on interest.

Do not rush out and buy the newest product on the market when it first comes out. You may find that waiting until they hype has died down can save you big money in the end. You may not be able to brag to your friends but you will have cash in your pocket!

Remember, that no matter how bad you are at math or how much numbers scare you, you can learn to intelligently manage your personal finances. By making the right financial decisions, you can greatly improve your financial situation and protect your money. Carefully read this article, apply the tips to your life, and don?t be surprised if the status of your finances quickly improves.

Israeli official: Government to round up Sudanese

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A senior official says Israel will start rounding up thousands of unauthorized Sudanese migrants and put them in a detention center if they don't leave the country voluntarily.

Interior Minister Eli Yishai says the detentions will begin in mid-October.

Yishai told Army Radio on Thursday that once migrants can't work, "they will get sick of being here and will want to leave voluntarily."

Israel is grappling with an unanticipated influx of 60,000 migrants from Africa, including 15,000 from Sudan. The government insists most came to find better lives, not asylum.

Most are from Sudan and Eritrea, states with repressive regimes.

Israel cannot expel them to their homelands because it has signed an international refugee treaty that bars it from forcibly returning migrants to countries considered liable to persecute them.

Republican convention looks like a tea party gathering

Most tea party Republicans have come to accept Mitt Romney as one of their own. But it's really Paul Ryan that they're enthusiastic about, and many of their champions are key speakers.

The tea party movement, which exploded on the political scene not long after Barack Obama?s inauguration as president and was a huge force in changing the face of the US Congress two years later, is a strong presence at the Republican convention.

Tea party values are reflected in the party platform, and tea party favorites are included among the major speakers ? including New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, slated to give the keynote address Tuesday night; Ted Cruz, favored to win the US Senate race in Texas; and Sen. Rand Paul, a founding member of the Tea Party Caucus in Congress. Others include US Sen. Marco Rubio, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

US Senate candidate and rancher Deb Fischer from Nebraska, a state senator who calls herself a ?citizen-legislator,? got her three minutes in the spotlight Tuesday when she was one of the early afternoon speakers, one of several lesser-known tea party favorites sprinkled throughout the three-day convention?s program.

Then there?s Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney?s vice presidential pick.

For the most part, tea partyers now support Mr. Romney, but many are even more enthusiastic about Mr. Ryan ? particularly for the budget plan he crafted in the US House of Representatives, which challenged some of the traditional thinking about government spending among his party?s leadership.

Tea Party Express Chairwoman Amy Kremer was asked this week whether she trusted Romney.

?Um, yeah,? she told CNN. ?I think it showed he understands the problems we?re facing when he picked Paul Ryan as his VP. That was very courageous. It was risky, it was courageous, and I actually think it was a brilliant move.?

Others in the movement are more wholehearted in their support of Romney, or at least they accepted the inevitable once the other tea party darlings ? Rick Perry, Herman Cain, and Michele Bachmann ? fell away, climbing onboard the Romney bandwagon in order to maintain their influence.

FreedomWorks president Matt Kibbe says, ?The Republicans have taken an important and significant step toward once again carrying the mantle of true fiscal conservatism.? He was speaking of the party platform approved here in Tampa, Fla., but its fiscal essence is much of the Ryan plan ? which has largely?become the Romney-Ryan plan. FreedomWorks is a conservative nonprofit that?s provided major funding for tea party activities.

Samsung Galaxy Note II: Have stylus, will travel

The Samsung Galaxy Note II is either a very large smartphone or a very small tablet. It should debut in Europe and Asia later this year.?

By Matthew Shaer / August 29, 2012

The Samsung Galaxy Note II.

Earlier this month, Samsung took the wraps off a device called the Galaxy Note 10.1 ? "the first 10-inch Android tablet," one pundit noted, "to offer compelling, consumer-friendly features the iPad can't match." Among those features was a stylus, or S-Pen, which allows users to scribble notes in the margins of e-books or to draw with more precision than a mouse or finger.?

Now, a few weeks later, Samsung is rolling out the Note 10.1's little brother, the Galaxy Note II. (We know, all these Notes can be a little confusing.) Like the 10.1 and the original 5.3-inch Galaxy Note, the Galaxy Note II will ship with the stylus.

But the Note II fit somewhere in between the 10.1 and 5.3 Notes ? the display is 5.5-inches ? putting it in extremely-large-smartphone/"phablet" territory." Specs are pretty strong: 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and Android Jelly Bean OS.?

The phone, Samsung exec JK Shin said in a statement, will "encourage users to?unleash their inner creativity.?With a perfect viewing experience and unique and differentiated features, users can discover information and capture their ideas faster, express thoughts freely and manage tasks more efficiently."

No word yet on price, nor US launch, the Note II will go on sale in Europe and Asia in October.?

In related news, Samsung was recently ordered to pay approximately $1 billion in damages to Apple, after a California jury found it guilty of violating a range of patents. Apple, in turn, is pushing for?injunctions against a number of Samsung handsets named in the litigation. That will likely hurt Samsung's standing in the market and put added importance on new devices such as the Note II. In fact, the case may mean that the Note II will never reach American shores, at least not until the appeals process plays out.?

Festival des Films du Monde: Coming back to the war

MONTREAL - The other day, Volker Schl?ndorff was trying to explain to his 20-year-old daughter why he keeps revisiting the Third Reich in his movies. Best known for The Tin Drum, his adaptation of G?nther Grass?s novel that got the Oscar for best foreign-language film in 1979, the veteran German director returned to the subject of Nazis and the Second World War in 1996 with The Ogre (starring John Malkovich) and again in 2004 with The Ninth Day, about a priest at Dachau.

His latest war movie is Calm at Sea (La mer ? l?aube), a 90-minute drama he made for French TV about the reprisal murder of 48 young Communist prisoners in occupied France in October 1941. Seen by over 1.7 million people in France and Germany when it aired last spring, the telefilm is being screened at the Festival des films du monde; Schl?ndorff flew in from Paris to present it Tuesday and give a ?master class? to fans; it screens again Wednesday and Thursday.

And there?s more Krieg to come. As Schl?ndorff revealed in a long conversation we had Monday after he and his wife, Angelica, checked into their hotel in Old Montreal, the director plans to start shooting another war drama next spring. It?s a feature film called Diplomacy, adapted from the French play by Cyril Gely, about the Germans? final days in Paris in August 1944, when army general Dietrich von Choltitz surrendered rather than disobey Hitler?s orders to dynamite the city.

?I tried to explain to my daughter why I find all this (Third Reich history) interesting, and of course the first reason is that it happened to my generation,? said Schl?ndorff, 73, who was born in Wiesbaden on March 31, 1939. ?If this had been some Roman war, or Alexander (the Great) in Asia, I might be just as interested, but since it happened to us it just hits a bit closer to home.

?The Second World War isn?t just something you can analyze historically or depict precisely. It?s also a field where you can explore extreme human situations, where you can explore evil,? Schl?ndorff continued. ?I think people?s interest in it will survive for a long, long time. And hopefully (interest in that war) won?t be replaced by another one.?

It still amazes him: ?How can the Nazis have done all that in 12 years? How was it all possible??

The moral choices people make in wartime or in a military environment have long fascinated Schl?ndorff, who began his career in France in the early 1960s as assistant director to filmmakers Louis Malle (on classics like Zazie dans le m?tro and Le feu follet), Alain Resnais (L?ann?e derni?re ? Marienbad) and Jean-Pierre Melville (L?on Morin, pr?tre). His own feature debut as a director, Young T?rless, in 1966, was set in an Austrian military academy in the early 1900s.

That film was an early benchmark of the New German Cinema movement, which he helped establish with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog and others. Schl?ndorff scored again with the 1975 terrorism drama The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (his first box-office hit, written and directed with his first wife, Margarethe von Trotta) and their 1976 follow-up, Coup de Gr?ce, about an aristocratic woman?s dalliance with Prussian soldiers in Latvia in 1919.

Schl?ndorff?s international fame peaked in 1979 with The Tin Drum, followed in 1981 by Circle of Deceit, shot in Lebanon with Bruno Ganz as a war correspondent. Schl?ndorff went on to work in Hollywood (Swann in Love, The Handmaid?s Tale, Voyager), adapted plays for TV (including Arthur Miller?s Death of a Salesman, starring Malkovich and Dustin Hoffman), staged operas (by Janacek, Henze and, most recently, Bizet), and, in a long break from filmmaking, ran the fabled Babelsberg Studio for six years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In between, he completed a pet project: a three-hour interview with his idol, legendary filmmaker Billy Wilder. First aired on BBC TV in 1992, it?s included as a bonus on the new British Blu-ray of Wilder?s 1945 drama The Lost Weekend; the disc is part of Eureka! Entertainment?s Masters of Cinema series. Schl?ndorff is travelling with a copy to give to a friend in New York, which he and his wife will visit after Montreal. His next film, Montauk, a modern adaptation of the 1975 novel by Swiss writer Max Frisch, is set there.

As someone who knew both Wilder and Miller, in the mid-1980s, Schl?ndorff is often asked what he knows ?from the inside? about Marilyn Monroe, who was Miller?s wife and Wilder?s star in the classic comedy Some Like it Hot. ?It was sometimes embarassing for me, going between the TV play with Miller and meeting Wilder in Hollywood: each would take me as his confidante and I?d get both sides of the story,? Schl?ndorff recalled.

?Arthur was still very resentful and said that Billy treated her badly and was so ruthless, and that?s why she lost her baby (when shooting wrapped in late 1958). And Billy said, ?How could I know she was pregnant? She didn?t tell anybody, and I?m not a nurse. We had a deal that she had to make a movie, and had I known (she was expecting) we couldn?t have done it, because no insurance would have covered her.? It must have been a nightmarish situation for all of them.?

A short, dapper man with rimless glasses and a moustache, a weakness for smoking cigarillos (despite having run many marathons), a big jade ring he bought from a Jewish jeweller in Tehran, and a deliberate, rather professorial way of speaking that?s punctuated by wry laughter, Schl?ndorff recounted that anecdote and many others in the hour we had at his hotel. Fighting jet lag, he and his wife later showed up for a late-night Goethe Institut cocktail reception for the many other German filmmakers who are at the fest (three have films in world competition).

Schl?ndorff has been coming here for years, since the very first days of the fest in the mid-1970s, when founding president Serge Losique used to take him jogging on Mount Royal. As a francophile, he feels at home in Montreal but finds he hears more and more English in the streets every time he comes. He?s never shot a film here, though Margaret Atwood tempted him to do so for his adaptation of The Handmaid?s Tale in 1990 (he chose the leafy campus of North Carolina?s Duke University instead).

In another little-known Canadian connection, he once had an aunt who lived in Calgary (a doctor, she had to settle for a career as a nurse after she immigrated), but she?s dead now and he no longer visits. Approaching old age himself, he doesn?t lack energy ? in fact, he says he?s glad to be free of ?distractions? that keep him from making movies, whether they be low-budget ones for huge TV audiences like Calm at Sea, or big-budget ones for the cinema that are seen by ?a few thousand people? at film fests.

His best work is widely available on DVD. The premium art-house movie distributor Criterion is preparing to re-release The Tin Drum with an extra 25 minutes of footage restored, bringing the movie to its original intended length (in the script and as shot and edited) of almost two hours and 45 minutes. Criterion wants Schl?ndorff to do a new audio commentary for the film, but he?d rather do an on-camera interview; he?s never liked the ?voice of God? format of commentary tracks.

?I?m basically bored by everything except filmmaking, or working with actors, doing plays, movies, and operas; I do documentaries, as well ? anything where I can tell stories,? Schl?ndorff said.

?At my age, I?m back to the old fashion of the showbiz professional. You can send me anywhere and I can wage any battle.?

La mer ? l?aube (Calm at Sea) screens again Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. and Thursday at 2:20 p.m. at Quartier Latin, 350 Emery (just west of St. Denis St. The 90-minute telefilm is in French and German with English subtitles.Tickets: $10. Info: ffm-montreal.org

Venezuela firefighters battling massive refinery blaze

PARAGUANA, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan firefighters struggled to finish putting out a blaze at the country's biggest refinery on Tuesday, with a fuel tank twice bursting into flames within minutes of authorities declaring it fully extinguished.

The partly-melted storage tank burned on and off at the 645,000-barrel-per-day Amuay refinery as teams poured foam over it to suffocate a fire sparked by a pre-dawn blast on Saturday that killed 48 people.

The blaze had been put out at around 10:30 a.m. (1500 GMT). Though it was not immediately clear if it might break out again, the fire seemed to be largely under control.

Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez has said the facility should restart within two days of the fire being put out. None of the processing units were hit by the blaze, though refinery operations were shut down on Saturday for safety reasons.

Ramirez has repeatedly assured that Venezuela has sufficient fuel inventories to supply the domestic market and continue meeting export commitments.

U.S. gasoline futures dropped sharply on Tuesday, a day after rising as much as 3 percent on the combination of the Amuay fire and Tropical Storm Isaac's potential threat to U.S. to Gulf Coast refinery operations.

The blast flattened hundreds of homes and left dozens wounded. Many of the dead were National Guard troops who were providing security in a compound next to the tanks.

The charred remains of two other fuel tanks, which had been extinguished before dawn, were almost entirely melted from three days of the blazing inferno.

Traders say the impact on fuel markets may continue even after Amuay is up and running again. Tank farm accidents often cause problems with gasoline blending, which may leave PDVSA relying on imports.

Venezuela has for years had to import fuel due to recurrent refineries outages.

Chavez said at the scene on Monday that he was creating a fund worth about $23 million to help pay for clean-up operations and replace homes destroyed by the pre-dawn blast.

It was one of the most deadly oil industry accidents in recent years, nearing the toll of the 1997 fire at India's Visakhapatnam refinery that killed 56 and topping the 2005 blast at BP Plc's Texas City refinery in which 15 people died.

Cheap air tickets and the European rules on ... - Travel and Leisure

The Europeans are in the same position as the Americans when it comes to the rules on compensation when flights are cancelled or passengers are refused boarding. As from 2004, there have been a unified set of rules to ensure that everyone gets the same treatment no matter which country they are flying in or to ? for the record, comparable rules apply to train services and other forms of public transport although the substance of the rules varies, e.g. the detail of rights on trains are not the same as those applying to maritime and river transport. This article only addresses the rights available to citizens of an EU Member State. Even if an American is a passenger on a European flight in Europe, none of these rights apply. The only remedies come under international treaties. However, Americans in Europe do get an indirect benefit.

The first and most obvious consumer right is to receive comprehensive information in a timely manner. If a problem arises hours before boarding is due, airlines should notify passengers by sms, Facebook or some other means to minimize inconvenience and avoid travel to the airport. Once you have arrived and presented yourself for boarding within the time limit, you?re entitled to compensation if the plane is overbooked and you cannot get a seat, even if you have cheap air tickets. The current practice is as follows. The airline first calls for volunteers who are prepared to give up their seats for an agreed amount of compensation. If no one volunteers, you must be offered a full refund or re-routing to your destination at the earliest possible time. For these purposes, a full refund includes the cost of flying you home if the purpose of your journey is now frustrated, e.g. you were flying to attend a friend?s wedding and you will miss it. If you choose a refund or re-routing, compensation must also be paid. This is up to 600 Euro depending on the distance you were due to fly. If your seat is upgraded, you cannot be asked to pay a higher ticket price. If you agree to accept a downgrade, the airline must refund the difference in seat price even if you had cheap air tickets.

Sony to stop manufacturing optical drives ? Computer Chips ...

Optical drives have been disappearing from computers in ever increasing numbers. Apple is moving away from using them and Ultrabooks turn a blind eye, too. You don?t even need one in a desktop PC anymore due to the option to boot from USB, and we are storing more and more data in the cloud rather than on disc.

So it may come as little surprise that Sony is getting out of the business. However, the reason seems to be one of competition rather than a lack of demand.

Sony Optiarc Inc. has been around since 2006 when it was created as a joint venture with NEC to manufacture optical drives. Then in 2008 Sony bought out NEC making Optiarc a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japanese company. Today it enjoys a relatively healthy 15% share of the global market for optical drives.

A 15% market share is worth holding on to if you?re making a profit, but that?s no longer the case for Optiarc. Sony has stated that due to increased competition for fewer sales it is now operating the business at a loss, which is clearly unsustainable.

Sony will close Optiarc operations no later than March next year with some 400 staff being offered early retirement or placed elsewhere in the company. It is though Sony wants most of the 400 to retire though, as part of its goal to cut 10,000 people from the company?s work force.

The closure of Optiarc?s production lines is not likely to have much impact on the availability of optical drives. Competitors will happily fill the void in what is a rapidly shrinking market.

Sony will continue to manufacture consumer DVD and Blu-ray players, as well as ensure there?s a supply of Blu-ray drives for the PS3. But by this time next year its unlikely you?ll be able to purchase a Sony manufactured optical drive for your PC.

Likewise, think about the best ways to use the significant reach of social media websites so they enhance your marketing plan, not replace it.? And what about your call to action? Even if you have the finest gizmo in the universe (and undoubtedly you do), your website visitor won?t likely buy your product or service if they aren?t darn sure what?s in it for them.

Mistake #1: Choosing A Business Name That Disregards SEO.

Example:
Back when the Yellow Pages were king, businesses vied for a name starting with ?AAA? because consumers searched alphabetically. If you couldn?t be at the top of the alphabet, you got creative. Clever branding such as ?Xtreem Kleen? may have worked pre-Internet, but nowadays someone looking online for a cleaning service would never enter that phrase. Humor is always refreshing, but before you decide on an?LOL?business name, bear in mind that it could stick with you for the long-term. The image of a hard-working gardener may not be conjured up by the name of a landscaping company in my town, The Dirty Hoe. Pulling off a risky pun has worked for this start-up so far, but it takes confidence and finesse.

Solution:
Your website will bring you traffic if it?s built smart with SEO techniques. Make your start-up business name work online as well. ?To start brainstorming ideas for your business, list the most relevant search words that people will enter online to find your business.? Choose the most relevant terms possible for your name. It?s okay to use hyphens if you need to, like we did when naming our consulting service, start-cleaning-business.com.? Keep in mind what terms people will search for.

Mistake #2: Relying Too Heavily On Facebook And Twitter.

Examples: Facebook can be stunningly ineffective and incredibly alluring as a substitute for the lazy marketer. Set up a Facebook page for your start-up, and post on it regularly with links leading back to your original webpages. But don?t do the majority of your marketing there. People will search for your business Facebook page to vet your company and see how you respond to other customers. They won?t necessarily go there to buy your service or products. The link structure of Facebook could be changed at any time, not to mention Facebook pages disappear from time to time with little or no explanation. The legalities of content ownership are uncertain, so to rely on it as a major part of your marketing scheme is to leave your company in the hands of a big business that isn?t invested in you.

Solutions: Make the effort to reach out and exchange quality content with other relevant websites. Make your business website social media-friendly, and use Facebook and Twitter as a part of a healthy, overall business marketing plan. Your traffic will come through affiliates, partnerships and links.

Mistake #3: Forgetting To Make The Call To Action.

A clear call to action should be part of your online marketing campaign.Examples: Don?t make your visitor connect too many dots. When interested readers land on the order page for our?Start a Cleaning Business?method, they see a list of the benefits they will get just below the purchase button. Leave some white space around the purchase button and the text. Crowding the order page with unnecessary information just confuses your reader.

Solutions: First, identify the problem and offer a solution.? What do you want your reader to do? Click a link, spread the word, purchase your product or service? Make it easy for them to do it. Clearly show the benefits they get for responding to your call-to-action. Brothers Plumbing in Denver, Colo., wants its customers to schedule an appointment. The benefits are laid out visually on the home page, right alongside the call-to-action button.

For Paralympian Donovan Tildesley, 'vision' means seizing day ...

Gary Kingston

As a blind person, Donovan Tildesley utilizes a talking computer, which features a digitalized voice reading off the screen.

?To someone sighted who hears it for the first time, it sounds rather ridiculous,? says the Paralympic swimmer/golfer/skier/insurance broker/motivational speaker and, most recently, standup comic. ?So one of my jokes has to do with ?How does a blind person look at porn?? And then I imitate this voice reading a [porn] story off the screen.

?It?s a little offensive,? he adds with a laugh. ?It?s like ?Who the hell would go there?? ? Well, as you are about to find out, there are very few places Tildes-ley, a 28-year-old adventurer and ladies? man and a guy with limit-less vision, won?t go.

Double black diamond ski runs. Parachuting out of a plane. A planned hike of Kilimanjaro. Or, a joke about a female insurance agent getting a boob job.

?I work in an office with a bunch of women and I answer the phone a lot of times. We?ll get calls from clients ?Oh, I was speaking to the girl, uh, the smallish, red-headed girl.? ?And I tell them I?ll have to ask around the office. ?I kept asking and no such person worked there.? But then I found out later in the day that my colleague dyed her hair and got breast implants that weekend.?

Now, his act isn?t all blue humour suitable for college campuses and HBO. There is some family-friendly fare. Like the joke about him being a pretty bad kid.

?My parents had to come up with alternate ways of disciplining me,? says Tildesley, who has been blind since birth as a result of being born with-out retinas. ?They couldn?t exactly take away my Nintendo because I didn?t play the damn thing. And I couldn?t watch TV. So, whenever I stepped out of line or did something foolish, they?d go and move the furniture on me.?

Ba-da-boom.

Tildesley, a five-time Paralym-pic medallist in the pool, is about to compete in his fourth Games starting Thursday in London. But for a young man once defined by how fast he could swim without benefit of sight, so much has changed in the four years since he was Canada?s flagbearer during the opening ceremonies at Beijing.

He got a job at Buntain Insurance, went skydiving for his 25th birthday, took up golf, spent seven months in 2011 at the Colorado Centre for the Blind learning independent living and tried his hand at cracking wise on a stage.

All of which means that earning a medal this time around, at what he says will be his last Paralympics, might be tough. He?s not sad about it. It?s just that priorities change. You get older. New challenges await.

?I can?t be an athlete for the rest of my life.?

He was an inspirational, vocal leader in Beijing, extremely honoured that his teammates felt him worthy of being the flagbearer.

?It?s not going to be the same high,? he says of London. ?I?m going to be in a different mind space. Four years ago, swimming was very much my life. I?m not saying it isn?t any more, but I?m at the point in my life right now where I know that winning a medal is no guarantee.

?This Games is icing on the cake. If I can get up on that podium, I?d be ecstatic, but if I can somehow motivate other athletes on my team, other younger swimmers, get them excited to perform to their personal bests, then I will have done some of my job over there.

?The other thing is I?m in the insurance industry now. How can I tie this success in the pool to growing my own book of business? How can being a Paralympian help me to become a better salesman for myself and my company? What can I do with social media to increase that? So I?m looking at it from the holistic experience.?

NEEDS OWN APARTMENT

A preppy looking Tildesley ? a collared shirt, dress shorts and loafers ? is seated at the outdoor patio of a restaurant on Broadway, having just finished lunch with a female colleague from another Buntain office, when we sit down to talk.

He and Christina Cavaco, who is off to a new job in Calgary soon, have known each for three years, but become really good friends in the last few months through extended conversations about their shared passion for sales, people and personal growth.

Cavaco is half-Italian, half-Portuguese and incredibly attractive. And you can?t help but think that it?s a shame that Donovan can?t see this woman. But in a sense he can, just in his own way.

?It seems so funny when he talks about me,? Cavaco says in an interview days later when asked if she believes Donovan appreciates her beauty. ?It makes me feel a little weird, makes me go red. I say ?You can?t see me,? but he says ?I can hear it in the way you talk.?

?With women, he?s not shy at all. He?s obviously blind, but he?ll go up to any lady and start talking to her. He says he can tell by her voice and the smell of her scent if she?s attractive.

?He?s such a great guy to hang out with, just amazing.?

Tildesley, who still lives with his parents in Point Grey, says his only difficulty with women is that he doesn?t have a home of his own for them to take him back to.

He?s looking for a place, but needs one that is close to work and the Arbutus Club pool.

?I have a good feeling that after this Games, this will be the year it happens. Plus, it makes me more marketable to the opposite sex. A guy who lives at home? It?s harder to find dates.?

To prepare for his independence, he spent those seven months at the school in Colorado, although it wasn?t quite what he had expected.

?I went down there expecting to meet blind go-getters who wanted to start their own businesses and wanted to make tons of money. But I met people who had lost their sight later in life who didn?t know what to do, kids who were just out of high school trying to figure their way in life, people with other learning disabilities. I remember getting there the first day and half the people didn?t even know what the Paralympics were. So, it was a rather humbling experience.?

He did learn how to cook ? the final task was cooking a meal for 60 people ? and fell in love with Colorado and its spectacular outdoors. He climbed a 4,200-metre mountain with Eric Weihenmayer, the first blind person to reach the summit of Everest in 2001 and a man who starred last year in the ABC reality show Expedition Impossible.

?Honestly, if I didn?t have a job to come to back here and a Paralympics to train for, I would have stayed in Colorado. While the school wasn?t quite what I expected, I got the life experience and it instilled in me this new confidence and this greater appreciation for the world around me and helped me to feel more comfortable in my new skin.?

On his return, he joined friend Amber Weland ? ?one of the most naturally funny people I know,? he says ? at a comedy show at the Fray on Fraser last December. ?We kind of turned to each other and said these guys suck and she says ?you and me in 2012, we?re going to put on some shows.? ? Weland and Tildesley, by the way, met a few years back at a Board of Trade function when she offered him her elbow as he was getting out of a taxi.

?We became fast friends from there,? says Weland. ?That day, he ended up sort of trash-talking me into doing a day of skiing with him up at Whistler. I?m a pretty good snowboarder and he often leaves me behind. I tell him he makes a great ski buddy. With him, I can get up in the morning and not have to do my hair or put on mascara. As long as I put on deodorant, I?m okay.?

One night last February, Tildesley beat out a dozen other budding comics at the Fray ? ?I guess I had a lot of friends out that night who drank a lot of drinks? ? winning $100 and a chance to perform in the finals at the Edgewater Casino. He didn?t win and has been a bit too busy recently to get back on stage, but hopes to find some time after the Paralympics. ?I?m constantly trying to think of new material that?s not too offensive.?

Tildesley, who has a BA in English literature from UBC, was set to take a job with RBC in the Visa call centre after Beijing when his family?s neighbour, Gordon Buntain, suggested he come work for him and help develop his company?s travel medical insurance.

It hasn?t been easy ? finding adapt-able software, dealing with potential roadblocks put up by regulatory agencies. But the blunt-spoken, high-energy Buntain has backed Tildesley at every step.

?I told him ?you can do anything you wish, but let?s dream big,? ? said Bun-tain. ?Yes, there?s going to be hurdles, but I?ll support you.?

Tildesley says it has been challenging. ?But over time, I?ve figured out that I have a passion for sales. I absolutely love people and building relationships, getting to know them and helping to solve their problems.?

?IN THE BEST SHAPE POSSIBLE?

Tildesley took up golf a few years ago. He hasn?t played as much as he?d like, but this spring, Buntain sponsored a hole at a fundraising tournament for Donovan?s old school, St. George?s.

?Basically, it was a longest drive com-petition,? says Tildesley. ?I would get up and hit a shot and people would try to hit their ball past mine. It was called Beat the Blind Guy.?

Utilizing a sighted guide, Tildes-ley loves ripping down the slopes at Whistler, but says he has no interest in becoming a Winter Paralympian.

?Gates scare the hell out of me. Ski-ing?s like my therapy. I like to go up to the alpine and cut down the steepest and the deepest. I?d be worried that taking it on as a serious sport would take the fun out of it for me and I need that in my life.?

But in the next breath, he says with a big smile, ?You know what I think would be a good sport? Blind ski cross. Imagine a bunch of blind guys going through a gate and all trying to stay on course and not run into each other.?

In London, Tildesley, who competes in the S11 class with other totally blind swimmers, will race the 100-metre butterfly, the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

He owns freestyle world records at 800 and 1,500 metres, but those distances aren?t contested at the Paralympics. In Beijing, he earned bronze at 400 metres and was fourth in the 100. He was also fifth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 100 butterfly.

Spaniard Mohamed Enhamed won four gold in Beijing, two in world record time. He is back, as are key competitors from Ukraine, China and Argentina. There is also a strong new-comer from the U.S. in Brad Snyder, who was blinded last September while serving in Afghanistan and who had captained the Naval Academy swim team in his senior year.

?I think I?m in the best shape possible,? says Tildesley. ?Am I as spry as I was four years ago, eight years ago? Maybe not. But I?ve done the work. I?ve put in the metres. I?ve just got to decide in my own head that I can stand up and race as fast as I can and get myself on the podium.?

He says he?ll probably swim for one more year after the Paralympics, go to one more world championships. Then, he?d like to give back to the sport by serving on some athlete councils.

?I think a lot can be done for advocacy in the sport. I wish there was a way to get more blind people involved in sport because it?s really done so much for my life. It?s not only physically and mentally beneficial, but it?s opened so many doors.

?I wouldn?t be the person I am today, have the friends I do today without my involvement in sport and the confidence it?s instilled in me.?

Family of slain US activist awaits verdict

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Almost a decade after their daughter was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer as she tried to block its path in a Gaza Strip conflict zone, Rachel Corrie's parents are preparing for a judge's ruling in their high-profile civil lawsuit against the military.

They hope Tuesday's court decision will conclude a case that's turned their daughter into a rallying cry for pro-Palestinian activists, taken years of their life and drained their savings.

"We are here with a great deal of anticipation for Tuesday," said Corrie's mother, Cindy, 64, a homemaker and musician from Olympia, Washington. "We are hoping for some accountability here for what happened to Rachel."

Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist, was 23 when she was killed in March 2003 while she and other activists sought to block an Israeli military bulldozer they believed was about to demolish Palestinian homes in the Gaza border town of Rafah. The driver has said he didn't see Corrie, and the death was accidental.

The Israeli army had been undertaking systematic house demotions in the densely populated border area, trying to halt shooting and mortar attacks against soldiers and Jewish settlers who used the route. The house destruction sparked international condemnation at the time.

While several foreign activists were killed or wounded in confrontations with the Israeli military during the last decade, Corrie's case has taken on special meaning for Palestinian activists.

For her supporters, she became a symbol of what they say is Israel's harsh repression of nonviolent protest to occupation. They saw in her a young middle class American who died believing that she was defending the homes of strangers. She was a passionate writer whose works showed how deeply moved she was by the suffering she saw around her.

Corrie's parents published those letters, and artists made a play about her life.

Corrie belonged to the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement, whose activists enter conflict zones and try interfere with activities of Israel's military. Supporters of Israel argue that Corrie, like thousands of other foreign activists, recklessly chose to risk her life.

"Rachel Corrie was injured as a result of her prohibited action, for which she is solely responsible, due to her considerable negligence and lack of caution," the Justice Ministry said in a statement.

The family's case is the first civil lawsuit of a foreigner harmed by Israel's military to conclude in a full civilian trial. Others have resulted in out-of-court settlements.

Since the Corries went to court in 2005, there have been 15 hearings and testimony from 23 witnesses.

They hope the court will apportion blame to the bulldozer driver and his superiors, who have all been cleared of wrongdoing in a military court.

The Corries are seeking a symbolic $1 in damages, along with compensation for the money they've spent bringing the case to trial.

The Corries said their case underscored how difficult it was for families to pursue justice for loved ones killed by Israeli forces.

Criminal convictions of soldiers, who are tried in military courts, are rare. In one case, an Israeli military court in 2005 convicted a former soldier of manslaughter in the shooting of a British activist, Tom Hurndall.

Israeli rights group B'Tselem said in 304 cases where soldiers killed Palestinians, only nine indictments were filed. Another 27 cases were awaiting a decision of the military advocate general and 14 cases were under investigation.

It has "conveyed a message to commanders and soldiers that there is little chance they will be held accountable," said Sarit Michaeli of B'Tselem. The Israeli military declined to comment.

The Corries said they spent over $200,000 of their own savings to fly in witnesses, attend hearings and translate over 2,000 pages of court transcripts. They were supported by an army of volunteers, including lawyers, translators and media activists.

"We found ourselves in a war of attrition with a state against a family. That's what it feels like," said Rachel's father Craig, 65, a Vietnam war veteran and a retired life insurance specialist.

One of the last photographs of Rachel Corrie shows a blonde woman staring pensively into the distance, her pen poised above her notebook, a gray scarf around her neck. It's often turned into a graffiti painting on walls in Gaza.

She's frozen in time, said her father Craig.

"Just think how she would have grown. She would be 33 years old now. And yet in her mind she stopped growing when she was almost 24. It's a strange sort of thing."

It was that memory that kept them going. "I think Rachel would be proud of us," he said.

philippine real estate news: Federal Land sees P12 billion sales this ...

By Zinnia B. Dela Pe?a (The Philippine Star) Updated August 27, 2012 12:00 AM

Manila, Philippines -? Federal Land Inc. (Fedland), the real estate arm of taipan George S.K. Ty-led GT Capital Holdings, sees reservation sales hitting P12 billion this year, up 32 percent from P9.1 billion in 2011 as the country?s residential property market continues to experience steady growth.

Jose Mari H. Banzon, executive vice-president and general manager of Federal Land, said the company has already booked P8 billion in reservation sales for the January-July period, on track to realizing its yearend target.

?Our goal is to hit P1 billion in reservation sales a month,? he said.

To take advantage of a buoyant property market, the company would launch six projects in the second half, located in Fort Bonifacio, Binondo, Quezon City, Cavite, Paco Manila and Cebu.

Banzon said the company is building Central Park West, the second residential tower within its 10.4-hectare large scale mixed use complex in Bonifacio Global City. The project?s centerpiece is the 66-story Grand Hyatt Hotel which is touted to become the tallest building in the country.

Slated for completion in 2014, The Grand Hyatt Hotel would have 400 rooms and provide 40,000 square meters of premium grade office space. It would be managed by the Hyatt Group, a leading global hospitality firm.

The first six floors of the main skyscraper would house the hotel podium and ballroom while grade A financial and corporate offices would occupy the eighth to 30th floors. The upper floors to the penthouse levels, on the other hand, would comprise luxury suites and other hotel amenities.

Banzon said the company is also targeting to grow the share of rental operations to total revenues to 25 percent from the current 10 percent.

As of Dec. 31, 2011, Fedland had an available landbank of 100.7 hectares, of which 97.3 hectares are owned. The company believes its existing landbank would be sufficient for development over the next 20 years.

To attract a wider clientele base and increase its recurring income, Fedland is stepping up the development of its current portfolio of masterplanned communities that combine stand-alone high and mid-rise residential condominiums and mixed-use developments.

The company also intends to focus on developing office facilities catering to the business process outsourcing sector within its areas.

Its current portfolio includes the Grand Midori Makati, Bay Garden Club and Residences, Riverview Mansion and Four Season Riviera in Binondo, the Oriental Place in Makati and The Capital towers in Quezon City.? Fedland also operates the five-star Marco Polo Hotel in Cebu.
