The Chip Behind Microsoft's and Google's Tablet Attacks

There?s been a big under-the-radar technology winner in the last couple of weeks: chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA).

A few years ago, the one-time graphics chip specialist started selling Tegra, a general purpose chip for non-PC devices. To date, the Tegra chip has appeared in some Android smartphones and tablets but it?s largely been overshadowed by Qualcomm?s (QCOM) Snapdragon chips and of course, the A4 and A5 chips designed by Apple (AAPL) and Samsung (005930:KS) that go into iPhones and iPads.

Of late, however, Tegra seems to be the darling of the device world. Microsoft (MSFT), for example, will use the chip in its upcoming Surface tablets. Google (GOOG), too, has picked the super-charged Tegra 3 chip for its Nexus 7 tablet. This means that the same Nvidia chip will sit in the $199 tablet from Google that?s a low-end rival to Amazon?s (AMZN) Kindle and in the higher-end, more expensive Surface device from Microsoft.

The Tegra 3 also made its way into the infotainment system of Tesla Motors?s (TSLA) new Model S sedan.

All told, Nvidia expects about 30 Tegra-based devices to appear this year.

The company spent billions of dollars to bring Tegra to life, and its shareholders have been waiting for a big old return on that investment. Of late, it?s looking as if Nvidia might have found its way into products that could be flashy enough to kick Tegra sales into higher gear. (Which is to say that Nvidia has plenty of work and genuflecting to the Fates ahead of it.) If nothing else, the world?s top technology companies?outside of Apple?clearly see Nvidia as the horse to bet on in the near future.

Weird life preserved, Pompeii-style

Jack Matthews / Oxford Univ.

This juvenile example of the rangeomorph fossil Charnia measures just two-thirds of an inch (17 millimeters) in length. Note the fine detail of the branches.

By Alan Boyle

Researchers have found the weird shapes of the world's earliest-known baby animals preserved in rock on Newfoundland's coast, apparently thanks to a Pompeii-like volcanic blast that covered the little critters with ash about 579 million years ago.

Like Pompeii's famous ash-encased forms, the ash layer solidified over soft bodies that otherwise might have been lost in the process of fossilization. In this case, the preserved animals are bizarre, fern-shaped animals from a little-known geological age known as the Ediacaran Period, which ran from 635 million to 542 million years ago. This is the age that marked the appearance of the first complex multicelled organisms ? strange-looking creatures that disappeared when the Ediacaran Period gave way to the Cambrian Period.

These particular creatures were rangeomorphs, fern-shaped organisms that lived deep below the sea surface. They bear a superficial resemblance to sea-pen corals, but their detailed body plan is like nothing that exists in the world today. Because they lived so far underwater, they didn't make use of photosynthesis, as most plants do ? but they may not have had all the charactistics of animals, either.

Scientists from Oxford and Cambridge University, in collaboration with the Memorial University of Newfoundland, found more than 100 of the fossil shapes in rocks at Newfoundland's Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve. Oxford's Martin Brasier said a volcanic eruption on a nearby island apparently overwhelmed "an underwater 'nursery' of baby Ediacaran fronds." Brasier is one of the authors of a report on the research due to appear in the July issue of the Journal of the Geological Society.

"The fossilized 'babies' we found are all less than three centimeters long and are often as small as six millimeters?? many times smaller than the 'parent' forms, seen in neighboring areas, which can reach up to 2 meters in length," Brasier said in an Oxford news release. "This new discovery comes from the very bottom of the fossil-bearing rocks, making it one of the oldest bedding planes to preserve 'animal' fossils in the whole of the geological record."

Another co-author, Cambridge's Alexander Liu, said "these juveniles are exceptionally well-preserved, and include species never before found in rocks of this age. ... The discovery confirms a remarkable variety of rangeomorph fossil forms so early in their evolutionary history."

Alex Liu / Oxford

This fossil shows the fine detail of a juvenile Trepassia wardae's branching pattern. The specimen is just 3 millimeters wide - about a tenth of an inch.

Alex Liu / Oxford

This photo shows what may be a previously unknown type of fossilized organism. The organism has a long, curved stem with fine "branches" at its tip. The branches represent some of the smallest organic features found within the rocks at the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve in Newfoundland.

The Ediacaran Period was an crucial era in evolution because it's thought to mark life's?transition from mostly microbial forms to a profusion of complex, multicellular organisms.

"We are now exploring even further back in time to try and discover exactly when these mysterious organisms first appeared, and learn more about the processes that led to their diversification in an 'Edicarian Explosion' that may have mirrored the profusion of new life forms we see in the Cambrian," Brasier said.

More about the earliest creatures:

In addition to Brasier and Liu, the authors of "A New Assemblage of Juvenile Ediacaran Fronds From the Drook Formation, Newfoundland" include Jack Matthews and Duncan McIlroy.

Building a Beautiful Home in the Country for Less - Idaho Real Estate

Rural LandAfter looking at all available rural properties for sale, are you still unsatisfied with what you have found? A great alternative to buying a home in the country is to build the home of your dreams on a piece of acreage in Middleton, Idaho.

Middleton Idaho Real Estate
Middleton has become an upscale and close-knit community in Canyon County, one of the fastest growing cities in the county. Middleton Idaho real estate is less expensive to purchase than it is in other cities. This is partially because property taxes are less in Canyon County, making Middleton a wise choice if you are seeking to build a custom home and looking to save money in the process.

Acreage
The size of the property for your new home will depend largely on your lifestyle choices. Do you own farm animals or horses? Do you want a large garden spot or space for a Recreational Vehicle? How about considering room to add onto your home in the future, or room for your kids to run? Have you reflected on how much space you want between you and your nearest neighbor? Be sure to ask your Middleton Idaho real estate agent for a copy of the protective Covenants and Restrictions (CC&R's) for the country communities you are interested in so that your investment is protected and perfect for your needs.

The Building Process
Finding a reputable builder may not be as difficult as you think. Your real estate agent is connected with many home builders who have already purchased Middleton Idaho real estate and are waiting to build your custom home. Acreage communities frequently provide home builders with lots specifically for this purpose.

Your first step will be to decide who will be building your home. Again, ask your realtor to facilitate this process, as he has done this many times professionally. The builder you choose will determine your choice of Middleton communities for your new home.

After choosing your lot, step 2 will be to meet with your builder and realtor to discover the floor plans that will be just right for you and your family. The best thing about building a home from the ground up is that you can customize everything from light switches and outlets to custom cabinets and closet space. The possibilities are endless!

Once you know the specifics of the home you want to build, step 3 will be to meet with your real estate agent and make an offer on the package deal. In addition to writing up the contract and legal paperwork, your realtor will coordinate the entire process between you and your builder from beginning to end.

Enjoy Your New Home
Building your dream home is a relatively easy process when it is approached in the right order and with the right professionals. And one way to be sure you are saving money in the process is to seek professionals with connections to Middleton Idaho real estate so you can enjoy the best value for your investment.

Gutters: Issue #312 - Mark Dos Santos

As someone who spent 7 years prior to my comics life working in a newsroom, today's page brings a smile to my face.

The internet has given everyone a voice and a platform to share that voice, which is a beautiful thing. But the opportunity to use that voice without proper diligence is rampant. I'm not saying that people aren't entitled to their opinions, but I am of the belief that opinions aren't necessarily journalism, and good journalism isn't without opinion. It's learning to understand the difference that makes for great reporters, columnists, and anchors. It takes talent, hard work and the ability to listen to what's happening around you.

Edward R. Murrow. Barbara Walters. Lloyd Robertson. These are journalists. They have reported on and witnessed moments that have changed the world. They have had their share of stories that didn't of course, but they know how to get to the humanity of a story and how to report it accurately, compassionately and with integrity.

Having a blog you update twice a month and using it to get free passes to Comicon is not the same thing.

Just sayin'...

Also, I can confirm with many independent sources that the artist of today's page is Mark Dos Santos:

Mark Dos Santos, a Kubert School Alumni, left New Jersey for sunny California to pursue a career in animation as a storyboard artist and character designer. He quickly became involved in comics producing independent titles. Mark has done work for Western Tales of Terror, Monkey vs Lemur, Zenescopes Grimm Fairy Tales, Fall of Cthulhu Godwar, Eureka : Dormant Gene for Boom Studios, IT! The Terror from Beyond Space for IDW and cover work for Hack/Slash from Devil's Due. He has also done sketch cards for Inkworks, Strictly Ink and Rittenhouse on such properties as Hellboy Animated, Family Guy, 2000AD, Ray Harryhousen, Marvel and DC COMICS.

Have a great New Comics Day, folks! See you back here Friday!

Prions, the causal agents of Mad Cow and other diseases, are very unique infectious particles. They are proteins in which the complex molecular three-dimensional folding process just went astray. For reasons not yet understood, the misfolding nature of prions is associated to their ability to sequester their normal counterparts and induce them to also adopt a misfolding conformation. The ever-growing crowd of misfolded proteins form the aggregates seen in diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Once misfolded, a protein can no longer exert its normal functions in the cell...

Hughes bounces back as Yanks?edge Indians

By HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:36 p.m. ET June 26, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Dewayne Wise was helped up by several fans in the stands, saw the emphatic out call and thought one thing: keep the glove closed.

Wise ran straight for the dugout - giving birthday boy Derek Jeter a glove tap on the way - after flipping into the crowd while trying to make a catch of a foul ball during the New York Yankees' 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.

"What was I supposed to do run back to left field?" Wise said. "I saw him looking at my glove so I just got up, put my head down and ran off the field."

Wise knew he never had the ball when he went over the low wall down the left field line with two outs and a runner on third base in the seventh inning. Third base umpire Mike DiMuro didn't realize the ball hit off Wise's glove and fell for a souvenir until he saw a replay after the game.

"I went out on the ball and saw the ball into his glove in the stands. He disappeared into the stands and I believed that the ball was in his glove," DiMuro said. "In hindsight, I should have asked him to show me the ball since he fell into the stands and out of my line of vision."

Phil Hughes threw his hands up in the air, thinking Wise just helped preserve his shutout. Manager Joe Girardi thought it was a tough call.

"They're human. As much as we want them to be perfect and as much as there's talk about replay and all this stuff, they're under such a microscope the way the TV has developed this slo-mo that it's - I think it's a difficult time to be an umpire," Girardi said

Before seeing a replay, Indians manager Manny Acta had an inkling his team had gotten some bad luck in their fourth straight loss.

"If it's a great play, how come you're not showing it on the board for the fans?" Acta said. "We were discussing that with the umpires, but, what can you do?"

Hughes (8-6) got out of that jam and several others in pitching eight innings of six-hit ball.

"That's the first time I've seen an all left-handed lineup before and I'm pretty comfortable with my fastball going in on lefties," Hughes said.

Alex Rodriguez hit a long home run for New York, which scored five of its runs without a homer - they came in on a tear, having scored 16 of their last 21 runs on long balls.

"We only hit one homer," Girardi said with a chuckle of the Yankees' streak of five straight games with at least two drives that came to an end. "We had some big hits by some guys."

Curtis Granderson had a two-run single and Chris Stewart added an RBI hit as several bounces went New York's way against Justin Masterson (4-7) in the second inning.

Little is going right for the Indians. In their previous four games Cleveland scored just five runs. They scored four runs against Cory Wade in the ninth on Johnny Damon's RBI single and Jose Lopez's three-run homer. Lopez was in for third baseman Jack Hannahan, who was ejected in the eighth.

Rafael Soriano got one out for his 16th save.

On the flip side, the Yankees can do little wrong these past few weeks. Rodriguez's monster shot in the seventh off Tony Sipp into the second deck in left field was No. 642 of his career and helped the Yankees to their fourth straight win and 14th in 17 games. Masterson had never allowed a homer to the Yankees in eight outings and that held true. So the Yankees played small-ball against the pitcher with a 1.24 ERA in June and a streak of having not given up an earned run in 20 1-3 innings coming in.

Mark Teixeira walked leading off the second inning but was taken out at second base on Nick Swisher's fielder's choice. After out No. 2, Wise, starting a second straight game after homering Monday night, singled. Stewart hit a hot shot down the third base line that hit off a diving Hannahan's glove for a run-scoring single. Hannahan argued with DiMuro the ball was foul.

Jeter then hit a bouncer that deflected off Masterson's lower leg and he reached safely to load the bases. Granderson followed with a two-run opposite-field single to left-center to make it 3-0.

Granderson walked leading off the fifth and advanced to third on Robinson Cano's broken-bat blooper to short center field. Teixeira drove him in with a fly to center.

"There were a lot of miss-hit balls, not real comfortable swings, which is exactly what you want, and somehow, you're four runs down on the board," Masterson said. "But I feel we were doing a lot better than the way that looked."

The Bleacher Creatures chanted "Hap-py Birth-day!" for Jeter instead of his name during roll call. Fans gave a big cheer when the newly 38-year-old captain gave a wave.

NOTES: Indians DH Travis Hafner (minor right knee surgery) will begin a rehabilitation assignment Wednesday at Triple-A Columbus. There is no set amount of games scheduled yet, Acta said. ... RHP Carlos Carrasco (elbow reconstruction surgery last September) threw from a mound. "It's encouraging to see him throw the bullpen the way the ball was coming out of his hand today," Acta said, adding Carrasco is on track to return next season. ... The Yankees claimed RHP Danny Farquhar off waivers from Oakland and optioned him to Double-A Trenton. To make room on the 40-man roster, they transferred OF Brett Gardner to the 60-day DL. Girardi says there is little chance Gardner (elbow) will return before the All-Star break.

How do Home Improvement Loans Work?

Home improvement loans are a specific type of mortgage that can be obtained by homeowners when they are having construction done, or home improvements done, and need additional financing in order to complete it. These loans can work much like a conventional second mortgage, however a more complex refinancing process might work better for some homeowners.

?

When a more traditional mortgage is arranged for a home improvement loan, it can be done in the form of a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit. Home equity loans can be extended over a certain number of years, with regular monthly payments being made on both the interest and the principal of the loan. The interest rates that come with home equity loans are almost always fixed. Upon approval of a home equity loan, the homeowner will be given the full amount of the loan all at once, which can be beneficial for homeowners that are involved in large construction projects, when large amounts of money are needed all at once.

?

A home equity line of credit is a second mortgage much like a home equity loan, but lines of credit do work quite differently.

Firstly, lines of credits or HELOCs as they?re also called, almost always work on a variable rate, unlike home equity loans; and instead of making the same, regular payments, the only payments due on home equity lines of credit are interest payments. These will need to be paid until a pre-determined date at the end of the loan, when the entire balance will be due.

?

Typically the only requirement that homeowners will need to be approved for a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit is twenty percent or more equity in their home.

This is the total amount of the home that the homeowner actually owns, either by paying their mortgage payments or through their down payment. Even when a homeowner has equity in their home, they will not be able to borrow against all of it, as only eighty percent of the equity is the usual standard that lenders will allow.

?

For those that don?t want a traditional second mortgage, a cash out refinance might be a better option. Refinancing can be a complex process that involves a lot of paperwork and can take quite a long time so homeowners need to seriously consider it before embarking on it. A cash out refinance though can allow a homeowner to both change the terms of their mortgage and reduce their monthly payments, while giving them extra cash at closing to use on their home improvements.

?

Home equity loans, home equity lines of credit, and cash out refinancing are just a few of the names that home improvement loans go by. Whichever one you choose will depend on what?s best for your situation, as all of them have very different terms and qualifications, and different benefits too. Making home improvements is a great way to add value to your home, and to your investment. And knowing which home improvement loan option to use is a great way to get it done!

Pixar Features First Heroine

Pixar?s first heroine has been greatly anticipated for a long time, and she has finally arrived in ?Brave??a heartwarming, fable-like tale about courage and pride.

Sassy and as bold as her bright red hair, Scottish princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) loves adventure, archery, and freedom. When she is told by her parents, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) and King Fergus (Billy Connolly), that she will soon be married off to a son of one of the kingdom?s lords, Merida storms out of the castle and attempts to search for her own fate.

Marriage is the last thing on Merida?s mind, even though her mother has been training her to be queen her entire life.

\>");

Things start getting interesting when she crosses paths with a suspicious old woodcarver who claims she can help Merida get her wish that her mother ?will change.?

?Brave? directors Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman creatively insert plot twists that are sure to entertain and surprise the audience. This storyline is tightly wrapped around the mother-daughter relationship of Merida and the queen, sharing a few reminiscent qualities with ?Tangled.?

The stunning animations done by Pixar studios beautifully portray Scotland?s terrain and bring its people and history to life.

Merida is an immensely fierce and strong character. Her character is complex enough to be appreciated by an older audience but stubborn enough to appeal to younger audience members, who may likely relate to her ?That?s so unfair!? arguments with her mother.

Macdonald provides the perfect accent and energy as Merida?s voice. The entire vocal ensemble is very fitting, including Thompson as the mother struggling to break through the communication barrier between her and her daughter, and Connolly playing the easy-going parent.

Merida?s three younger, mischievous brothers don?t share much of a vocal presence, but their little gags and tricks provide great laughs from beginning to end.

The Scottish authenticity of the animations is breathtaking, and even the cultural jokes are done tastefully. The strong sense of community among the characters and their connection to their Scottish roots is very prominent.

Brave

Director: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman
Cast: Kelly Macdonald, Julie Walters, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, John Ratzenberger
Running Time: 100 minutes
Rating: PG

One thing that really stands out about ?Brave? is the musical score written by Patrick Doyle. He captures the essence of Scottish heritage music and still keeps it fresh for modern-day audiences.

A host of excellent qualities can be found in ?Brave??the action, the humor, the characters, the story, and the morality. This fantastic animated picture moves at a quick and steady pace, and it nails the humor without sacrificing the emotion and lessons about pride and family.

?Brave? can easily outshine any other animation feature for originality and heart, but may seem slightly underwhelming only when measured by the audience?s expectations of Pixar and alongside previous classics such as ?Toy Story? and ?Ratatouille.?

The Turndog Review: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close | Strategic ...

Hello there and welcome to The Turndog Review: the books I read, reviewed.

I aren?t a professional critic, instead all I offer is my honest opinion into everything I read. However, I do this with a difference, as I don?t only offer my personal views on the Writing, Plot, and Story, but also the Book Cover, Book Marketing, and Author Website.

We live in a modern world where being a writer is different to years gone by, and I feel the whole experience of the book matters. This covers everything from the initial find, the actual read, and everything that follows. Therefore I hope this review not only offers a great insight into the book and author, but also into my own mind and what makes me tick.

So without further ado let?s begin, and today I focus on? Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

?

Published: 2005

Read: May 2012

Discovered: Part of the Goodreads May Book Challenge

?

Overview:

This book was part of my Goodreads book challenge, and as I remember seeing adverts for the movie, I thought why not. It had Tom Hanks in it; so I was immediately interested and felt it could be good read.

Indeed it was, although it was very different to what I expected.

Are You Building An Author Platform

[DOWNLOAD] How To Build An Author House for Free Instant Access!

Why settle for a Platform when you can have a House?

It focuses on Oskar, a nine-year-old boy in New York who lost his father in 911. He?s a very smart, inquisitive little thing, and he?s sure his dad left him a treasure map of some kind; a chance to have one final adventure.

So he ventures around New York and meets many interesting folk, the story following his journey as well as splitting time with the insight of a man and woman.

I thought it would be a more happy go lucky story, which is crazy when you think of the premise, but I thought it would centre around his dad actually leaving him an adventure and a close up to their relationship of years gone by. This isn?t the case, but I found myself really liking it regardless.

?

The Good:

I loved Oskar. God I bet he?s annoying to meet, but what a charmer he is. And when he says Jose, well, I love it. He is by far the stand out in this story, and to feel so connected with a nine-year-old mind is great.

I also loved the side story too, once I gathered what it was about, and feel it adds real depth to proceedings. I knew I was going down a particular path, and at times I felt I had it figured out, but the author keeps thing just far enough away to make the story compelling.

Finally, I love the inclusion of pictures, not good ones, but awful, grainy snaps. It makes it very quaint and personal, and it feels like a child actually had a hand in things.

?

The Bad:

Some of the side stories can drag a little, and I must say, it took me a while to get into things. If I had less patience I could have easily left this story early doors, or begun skipping parts.

Overall it?s a top book. It?s well written, very compelling, emotional, and rather clever. And some of the characters, wow, I love them!

?

Book Cover:

I read the Ebook and got the version with the movie type cover. I?m not a fan. It draws your attention with the picture of the boy, but it?s hard to read what everything says. There?s also a lot of small text floating about, which I couldn?t read.

Not bad for a paperback, but easy to forget as an Ebook. I?m a fan of simplicity, and simple this is not.

extremely loud and incredibly close cover

Book Marketing:

Well, there isn?t any, really. It?s well laid out, and there?s good info about the publisher, but very little about the author. Consider Jonathan has another bestseller, Everything Is Illuminated, well, there?s no mention of this.

I?ve said it once and I?ll say it again. It?s lazy and things need to change. Make an Ebook count, and in my opinion, this fails miserably here.

?

Author Website & Engagement:

I?m afraid we have another author who doesn?t see online engagement as an important thing. However, I won?t go too hard on him, because in general, I don?t think his audience is online too much.

My initial feeling, which could be wrong, is that his readers are largely in their thirties and beyond, and newspapers and book signings provide a great way to connect.

However, you don?t need much of a presence to have good presence. No presence online is rarely a good thing. I do feel its shame, and another cross in the established, big time Author ?box?.

[hr]

Overall I?m a fan and would happily recommend this book. It?s a very touching tale, but also rather dark. It has some twists and many layers, and I honestly felt like I?d learnt something after reading this.

The marketing side of things is poor, and therefore does set it back, but the story is superb, and as such, I want to read Everything Is Illuminated too.

As for the score?

Thanks for reading this version of The Turndog Review. I review every book I read, not only for the writing, but the marketing, website, and general communication from the author.

In remote China, plant hunters seek clues to climate change

Studying how flowers adapt to global warming in remote China helps scientists?consistently demonstrate climate change, say botanists.?

Most Mandarin syllables have multiple meanings, so whenever the?American ecologist Robbie Hart greets strangers in China,?he explains the meaning behind Du, his Chinese name.

?Du as in cuckoo flower,? he says, referring to du juan hua, the Mandarin term for rhododendron.

In 2009, Mr. Hart began traveling to China?s Yunnan Province to study rhododendrons, a flowering plant with famously pretty flowers. About half the world?s roughly 1,000 rhododendron species are native to Yunnan and areas of Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar (Burma) ? a region that was a favorite destination of 19th?and early 20th century American and European explorers who traveled east at the urging of Western botanical curators and green-thumbed aristocrats.

Hart, a graduate student at the University of Missouri, has inspected more than 10,000?of the explorers? archived flowers at museums and institutions across Europe and the United States. He is now comparing them with his present-day rhododendron samples. But unlike his footloose predecessors, his aim is to see whether rhododendron behavior during the past century reflects changing global weather patterns.

He is one of a small handful of botanists in the world who study climate change by analyzing how flowering plants are adapting their flowering cycles in response to warming global temperatures. Botanists say such research is important because it draws on little-known historical data to help illuminate the scientific present.

?When these collections were established, no one really thought about climate change research,? says Richard Primack, a professor of biology at Boston University who studies flowering plants in the US and several Asian countries. But today they help scientists ?to very consistently demonstrate that climate change?is the new reality.?

Chronicle of flowers

It's rewarding to study plant collections in regions where botanists have made a habit of roaming. Mr. Primack, for example, inspects naturalist records that writer Henry David Thoreau kept of Concord, Mass. Scientists Yasuyuki Aono and Keiko Kazui analyze 9th century chronicles of flowering cherry trees in Kyoto, Japan.

Every Tattoo Enthusiasts Who Will Get A Design Tattooed On Their ...

Every tattoo enthusiasts who will get a design tattooed on their skin consider theirs the best. They choose from amongst 1000?s of tattoo styles, verify out numerous tattoo styles and various categories that they fall in, the appropriate dimension and the greatest artist in city to produce their aspiration onto the pores and skin.

Even although they take all necessary before beginning on their tattoo to ensure the design arrives out to be the greatest, some points are left unnoticed. Those points have been discussed in the subsequent paragraphs.

The leading ten tips to steer clear of customized tattoo style disasters that people require to consider before obtaining a tattoo are as follows.

one. If you are interested in obtaining a Chinese, Sanskrit, Japanese, or an Arabic phrase or phrase from cultures throughout the globe, make sure that the final style is an precise replication of the word and any modifications in the dimension or form do not alter the which means of that phrase or phrase. These symbols are often quite complicated and 1 mark in the wrong direction may completely change its meaning. Also check if the artist is nicely skilled in duplicating these symbols and that the translation is right from someone who is fluent in studying the language.

two. Carefully select the location of the tattoo. Some areas of the physique do not age nicely (and some are quite painful to tattoo ? particularly ankles). So based upon the size and significance of the selected design, its place is extremely essential.

three. Pick the design carefully. There is nothing wrong in following present trends in tattoo designs but make sure they suit your character as well. If a specific design is very popular and you also like it, believe two times. Tattoos replicate who we are. Select a style that represents your character qualities, your passion, your way of life or your heartfelt emotions for these around you more than the types that are in vogue.

four. Discover out and comprehend what can happen to you while the tattoo is healing. You might expertise swelling, itching, redness, scabs, fever, and even infections from a tattoo. So follow the following-care directions, maintain it clean, and use an antibiotic moisturizer.

five. Be sure to understand what all it requires for the tattoo to recover correctly.

6. Be sure that to have a certain tattoo design inked on your physique is your accurate desire. Don?t get a tattoo on a whim. It entails cash, requirements time as well as a dedication to have a preserve 1. Also, it is some thing that stays with you for the rest of your life. So make certain it?s the right factor to do.

seven. If you have a customized tattoo design produced particularly for you, primarily based on your ideas and tastes, make sure it is drawn out in precise detail for the tattoo artist to see and understand the style obviously.

8. For a custom design, get a check style made that can be place on unique check paper, placed on the pores and skin, and worn for a couple of days first. It?s particularly essential if the dimension of your design has been enlarged or decreased from the unique design/ size.

nine. Don?t get a inexpensive tattoo design stencil. Get a higher high quality stencil simply because a poor quality one will be a catastrophe.

ten. Never compromise on the style of your option. If the tattoo artist states the design is as well elaborate, then it is probably beyond his/her abilities and it is a sign for you to look for an additional artist who has the caliber to do the style. Invest some time with the artist to make certain that he or she understands the style and is able of performing it correctly. You might see some samples of their previous work or check people?s reviews of the artist?s work.

There are numerous people who regret getting tattoo designs that were not chosen or inked with because of treatment. As a result, they either stay covered or individuals opt to get them eliminated which cost them a lot of cash and bodily pain. So be sure to appear at these top 10 suggestions to avoid such custom tattoo style disasters.

Unfixable Computers Are Leading Humanity Down a ... - Tech News

Circuit boards on display at an electronics repair shop in Nairobi, Kenya. Photo: Kyle Wiens

I?ve been writing about Apple and the value of repair for the better part of the last decade. Repair is our mission at iFixit ? and it always has been. Even so, I didn?t expect the scale of the public response when I argued last week that consumers should choose the hackable, fixable non-Retina MacBook Pro over its sleeker-and-shinier-but-locked-down sibling.

The debate has been contentious. Garrett Murray argues that repairability is ludditism, old-fashioned inertia dragging down forward progress. He believes that more compact devices will necessarily be less upgradeable and hackable.

Others said repair doesn?t matter; consumers don?t care. On some level, they?re right. If something breaks, most computer owners won?t grab a screwdriver ? they?ll take it to a specialist. And if the computer outlives its usefulness, they won?t upgrade their machine, they?ll just buy a faster one. Some folks correctly pointed out that Apple products are more durable than other computers. Plus, Apple has a reputable extended warranty program.

The future of this planet depends on the quality of our electronic devices ? and how long they last

But sending your difficult-to-repair computer off to a Genius doesn?t exempt you from repair troubles. About a third of computers break by the fourth year. AppleCare doesn?t cover accidents and only lasts up to three years. Less repairable design guarantees that fixing stuff will be more expensive and complicated. Repairability is important for consumers.

Yet I think this argument misses the bigger point. The future of this planet depends on the quality of our electronic devices ? and how long they last.

Technology doesn?t just make our lives more convenient. It makes life better on a global scale. Modern communications have driven advances in biotechnology, soil science, and medicine. For the first time, farmers are able to get instant weather advisories, pay for fertilizer by phone while standing in the field, and fight back against local monopolies with access to global commodity prices. Globally, we manufactured 1.6 billion cell phones last year, and we?ll make over 2 billion this year. The problem? The way we?re doing it hurts people and permanently damages our environment.

I dream of a sustainable technology industry that makes life-changing innovations like the iPad available to everyone on the planet. But I have a message for Jonathan Ive. I think that on top of building amazing new products, the technology industry should have three goals:

I?ve spent a lot of time studying these problems. I?ve visited the electronics scrapyards in Ghana where children burn electronics to mine them for raw materials. I?ve interviewed product designers at leading electronics manufacturers, including ones that integrate life cycle analysis into their design process. And I?ve spent a lot of time studying the aftermarket ? the raw underbelly of the consumer electronics industry, where repair, reuse, and material recovery happen.

There?s no such thing as a completely green cell phone or computer. Even elective ?green? standards like EPEAT are far from mandating environmentally neutral products. I?m on the EPEAT balloting committee, and chemical companies have successfully lobbied for years to water down standards ? much to the chagrin of everyone, including many manufacturers.

I?ve learned that most of the environmental and social impact of the electronics industry happens outside of the purview of the device manufacturers: It happens in mines and chemical factories well upstream of Foxconn and in unregulated scrapyards around the world.

Pit mining is savaging the environment, causing water pollution issues that lead to birth defects and are unbelievably expensive to clean up. Semiconductor manufacturers? insatiable demand for a vast array of minerals is also causing geopolitical issues. China is heavily restricting exports of rare earth metals to prop up its domestic manufacturing sector.

?Goodbye, iBook. In your death, may you give life to a dozen more computers.?

When the warranty ends, manufacturers would prefer it if stuff disappeared so they could sell you a new product. But the real world isn?t nearly so tidy. Only a small fraction of the electronics produced are recycled. And even then, they?re usually shredded and separated into component materials. Shredding is a waste of resources and squanders the embodied energy in devices. Worse, many materials, including rare earths and coltan, are not being recovered at all.

So, why do we keep making more devices? We?re pretty close to manufacturing almost all of the electronics we need. There?s no need to make a billion more cell phones next year than we did this year. Increased manufacturing isn?t just due to advances in technology ? we?re not very efficient at utilizing things that we already make. If you don?t have at least one cell phone in your junk drawer, I bet someone in your family does. That phone could be helping someone else.

In an ideal world, after you?ve moved on to your next gadget, technicians will continue to repair, salvage, and refurbish the old one. It will move on from owner to owner. iFixit is part of that ecosystem ? in addition to teaching repair, we buy computers from people and resell the components. I once received a computer with a handwritten note on it: ?Goodbye, iBook. In your death, may you give life to a dozen more computers.?

And that?s my hope for electronics everywhere. Fortunately, the migration of usable electronics to the developing world is natural. Lots of people can?t afford to buy new computers. Passing along old devices is the best way to share the benefits of technology. In a few years, the computer that you gave to Goodwill could very well end up in a computer lab in Kenya. I know electronics refurbishers that have resold the exact same computer six or seven times. And assuming repair techs have the knowledge and skill required to maintain them, those computers will serve their owners well, costing less each time they?re passed along.

Long-lasting, repairable hardware is the key to making computers available to people who couldn?t otherwise afford them. Upgradeable tech also helps ? even if you don?t upgrade your own computer, somebody else down the line can. It?s amazing how long people can keep technology running.

Manufacturing electronics results in lots of nasty environmental problems, everything from toxic dumping to aldehyde vapor emissions. We have decided, if only by inaction, that the cost of our hyper-productive modern lifestyle is worth these tradeoffs. I?m culpable myself ? I live at the cutting edge along with all of you.

But if we?re going to make that tradeoff, the least we could do is to pass on the technology we?re enjoying now. That?s why I am so eager to promote hardware that lasts and call out products that don?t. It?s critically important that we fix things when they break. Consumers need to demand products that aren?t just light and thin, but can also stand the test of time. Because technology is far more than just another new gadget ? it?s our future.

Iran general: Military strike would be end of Israel

DUBAI - A high-ranking Iranian general said on Saturday Israeli military action against Iran's nuclear program would lead to the collapse of the Jewish state, Fars news agency reported.

Last week's round of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers in Moscow failed to secure a breakthrough, heightening fears Israel might take unilateral military action to curb Iran's nuclear activities.

The two sides agreed to a follow-up meeting of technical experts on July 3, saving the process from outright failure.

"They cannot do the slightest harm to the (Iranian) revolution and the system," Brigadier-General Mostafa Izadi, deputy chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, told Fars.

"If the Zionist regime takes any (military) actions against Iran, it would result in the end of its labors," he added.

"If they act logically, such threats amount to a psychological war but if they want to act illogically, it is they who will be destroyed."

Izadi's comments are an apparent response to Vice Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz's calls for tougher sanctions against Tehran and his indication that military action was still an option.

Analysts say Iranian officials use such rhetoric as a way of stoking Western concerns of chaos in the Middle East and the disruption of oil supplies in the event of military action.

Click here for full Jpost coverage of the Iranian threat

During negotiations in Moscow the six powers - the United States, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany - demanded Iran scale back its nuclear work and, in particular, stop enriching uranium to levels that could bring it close to making an atom bomb.

The demands included the shutting down of the Fordow underground uranium enrichment facility and the shipping of any stockpile out of the country.

In return, they offered fuel to keep Iran's medical isotope reactor running, assistance in nuclear safety and an end to a ban on spare parts for Iran's aging civilian aircraft.

Iran denies its work has any military purpose and says the powers should offer it relief from sanctions and acknowledge its right to enrich uranium before it meets their demands.

Why Microsoft is building its own tablet computers - Apple 2.0 ...

Microsoft's Surface

FORTUNE -- Having apparently concluded that Microsoft's (MSFT) new tablet computer initiative -- dubbed Surface -- is not in fact a "hoax," Daring Fireball's John Gruber took a hard look Wednesday at the company's decision to turn?against its manufacturing partners and build its own hardware.

The heart of Gruber's analysis is some math posted earlier in the day by Asymco's Horace Dediu.

Dediu calculated that the software licenses for Windows and Office generate about $78 in operating profit per PC sold. Apple (AAPL), by contrast, generates about $178 per unit operating profit just from the iPad. Microsoft used to make it up in volume, but tablet sales are on a trajectory to overtake sales of traditional PCs, which are in decline.

"So Microsoft faces a dilemma," Dediu concluded. "Their business model of expensive software on cheap hardware is not sustainable. The future is nearly free software integrated into moderately priced hardware."

That, writes Gruber, is why Microsoft has decided to compete with the manufacturers that have been its partners since the dawn of the PC era:

"This move was driven by the iPad, but competitively it directly pits Microsoft not against Apple but against Dell, HP, Toshiba, et al. The intention is obviously to slow the iPad down, but the radical shift in Microsoft's strategy is about the fight over the profits that remain after Apple's. The math no longer works out for the Windows you-sell-the-hardware-we-sell-the-software model. It works for unit share (cf. Android), but it doesn't for profit share. Nothing works sustainably in business without profit ? profit is the oxygen companies breathe.

"Even if Apple's growth soon slows, Apple already reaps a massive share of the industry's profits. And if Apple's growth doesn't slow in the next year or two, look out. All of Apple's competitors in the phone industry, save Samsung, are now starving for profit. They're dying, all of them ? HTC is breaking even and the rest are deep in the red.

"Microsoft Surface is not fundamentally about Microsoft needing to control the entire integrated product in order to compete with the iPad on design. It's about Microsoft needing to sell the whole thing to sustain its current profitability."

Its a thoughtful post. You can read it in full here.

Google Mistakenly Outs Android 4.1 In The Play Store, Galaxy Nexus To Be First Jelly Bean Phone

jellybeanWell isn't this interesting -- with just about five days to go until Google's I/O conference, the company may have just accidentally spilled the beans about their next big Android release. For a brief time, users who tried to purchase an unlocked Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play store was greeted by a blurb describing the device as the "the first phone with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean." Assuming this isn't just some random mistake Google has confirmed what nearly all of us expected their new update to be called, though there's sadly little other information to go on at this point.

Poll: Obama, Romney even amid economic worries

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Fewer Americans believe the economy is getting better and a majority disapproves of how President Barack Obama is handling it, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney has exploited those concerns and moved into a virtually even position with the president.

Three months of declining job creation have left the public increasingly glum, with only 3 out of 10 adults saying the country is headed in the right direction. Five months before the election, the economy remains Obama's top liability.

Obama has lost the narrow lead he had held just a month ago among registered voters. In the new poll, 47 percent say they will vote for the president and 44 percent for Romney, a difference that is not statistically significant. The poll also shows that Romney has recovered well from a bruising Republican primary, with more of his supporters saying they are certain to vote for him now.

Still, in a measure of Romney's own vulnerabilities, even some voters who say they support Romney believe the president will still be re-elected. Of all adults polled, 56 percent believe Obama will win a second term.

With his Republican nomination now ensured, Romney has succeeded in unifying the party behind him and in maintaining a singular focus on making the election a referendum on Obama's handling of the economy. The poll is not good news for the president, and it reflects fluctuations in the economy, which has shown both strength and weakness since it began to recover from the recent recession. The new survey illustrates how an ideologically divided country and a stumbling recovery have driven the two men into a tight match.

About half ? 49 percent ? approve of how Obama is handling his job as president, dropping him below the 50 percent mark he was above in May. Disapproval of Obama is highest ? 55 percent ? for his handling of the economy. Still, registered voters are split virtually evenly on whether Romney or Obama would do a better job improving it.

"I'm not going to vote for Obama," said Raymond Back, a 60-year-old manufacturing plant manager from North Olmsted, Ohio, one of the most competitive states in this election. "It's just the wrong thing to go. I don't know what Romney is going to do, but this isn't the right way."

Obama's overall 49 percent approval rating is not unlike the approval ratings George W. Bush faced in June 2004 during his re-election campaign, when he and his Democratic challenger, John Kerry, were also locked in a dead heat.

The polling numbers come as no surprise to either camp. Both Romney and Obama advisers have anticipated a close contest that will be driven largely by economic conditions. The Obama camp is busy trying to define Romney, hoping it is reaching more independents like Doss Comer, 58, of Jacksonville, N.C., who said he would vote for Obama again, despite the lagging economy.

"I think we are on the wrong track," he said. "We're not getting anywhere. We're not growing. The unemployment rate just spiked up again." But, he added: "I don't trust Romney because of what he's doing. He's telling his business experience, that he was an investor in business. ... I don't think he has the right background any more than Obama."

Besides weak job growth and still high unemployment, Obama is at the mercy of European countries struggling with a debt crisis that has already sent ripples across the Atlantic. At the same time, there are signs that the housing industry may be on the mend. U.S. builders started work on more single-family homes in May and requested the most permits to build homes and apartments in 3 1/2 years.

Those types of crosscurrents are also evident in politics. While preferences for November are evenly split, a majority believes Obama will still be re-elected, a shift from an even split on the question seven months ago. In December, 21 percent of Republicans said they thought Obama would win re-election; that's risen to 31 percent now. And among independents, the share saying Obama will win has climbed from 49 percent to 60 percent. Among Democrats, it was 75 percent in both polls.

Tim Baierlein of Brandon, Fla., believes Romney would be a reassuring voice for a business community worried about regulations and higher taxes. But he said he still thinks Obama will win because the right wing of the Republican Party could alienate voters away from Romney and because, in his view, Romney lacks a clear message.

"He just comes across as very elitist and I think that's going to hurt," he said.

About 4 out of 10 adults say they are worse off now than they were four years ago, compared with nearly 3 out of 10 who say they are doing better now. Among those who say they're doing worse, 60 percent say they plan to vote for Romney in November.

Amy Thackeray, 35, of Alpine, Utah, said her husband and five children experienced the economic downturn when it affected her husband's job. "We've dealt with a pay cut," she said. "We are grateful we still have a job. We live within our means. We save and we feel that in situations like this, it makes us save even more."

"We need someone with more financial and business experience than what Obama has," she said. "We need a president who takes one term and makes the hard decisions to put us back on the right track, and I hope it will be Romney."

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted June 14-18 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,007 adults nationwide, including 878 registered voters. Results from the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points; it is 4.2 points for registered voters.

PFT: Jacobs repays kid who emptied piggy bank

New Orleans Saints OTAGetty Images

The floodgates officially are open.

After weeks of silence, which many believed was motivated by fear of additional sanctions from the league office, the coaches who have been suspended as part of the bounty/pay-for-performance program are beginning to speak out aggressively regarding the league?s case against players accused of offering, paying, or receiving money for inflicting injury.

It has begun with Saints interim head coach/assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Vitt.? In the wake of Wednesday?s statement in which he expressed dismay over the sheet of paper that accuses him of putting up $5,000 for the alleged bounty on Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC title game, Vitt elaborated in remarks to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

?There?s gotta be some concerns from the league?s standpoint and anybody?s standpoint about the authenticity of any of these documents,? Vitt said regarding the key piece of paper that apparently lists the money pledged for the 2009 NFC title game.? ?I think that?s a huge concern.? It looks like that document has been falsified or tampered with. What kind of credibility do they have if they take documents like that and show it to players??

He?s right.? The one useful needle in the 50,000-page haystack contains a major flaw.? The notes prepared by a still-unknown person suggest that Vitt ponied up $5,000 to whoever knocked Favre out of the game.? So if as to Vitt the notes aren?t reliable, how are they reliable as to Jonathan Vilma (who is shown as kicking in $10,000) or anyone else?

The league has said that the offer appearing on the notes was corroborated by three people:? Gregg Williams, Mike Ornstein, and someone whom the league won?t name.? But Ornstein has said he didn?t tell the league Vilma had offered $10,000.

Williams hasn?t said anything, but there?s a chance Williams will be emboldened by Vitt?s decision to talk tough.

?I stated from Day 1 to investigators ? and I hope they took good notes ? our players have done nothing wrong. Nothing wrong,? Vitt said. ?Our players never crossed the white lines with an intent to injure anybody.?

Apart from the issue of innocence or guilt (and as I?ll explain during and after today?s PFT Live the issue of guilt or innocence really is a question of semantics), Vitt has a problem with the league?s procedure for passing judgment on the players.

?The bylaws of the National Football League supersede the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights,? Vitt said.? While the players aren?t ?on trial? in the criminal sense of the word (and thus not entitled to the protections of the Constitution), the fact remains that the NFL and the NFLPA have crafted a quasi-judicial procedure for handling matters of discipline without an outside person deciding whether the player did what he?s accused of doing.? And the procedure that the NFL administers must be fair and impartial, especially where the player loudly disputes the allegations against him.

Without a fair process, it?s impossible to get to the truth.? And so people like Vitt have taken matters into their own hands.

?The truth is starting to come out,? Vitt said.? ?[W]e?re gonna keep fighting the fight. We?re not gonna back down.?

Moving forward, it?ll be interesting to see whether Williams or anyone else follows Vitt?s lead in trying to get the truth out, whatever the truth may be.

Facebook to let developers charge subscriptions

Facebook is letting app developers charge subscription fees, in addition to existing one-time payments, for games and other applications on its site.

Facebook said on its developer blog on Tuesday that the subscription feature will be available in July. The changes open up a new revenue stream for developers as well as for Facebook, which takes a 30 percent cut from all payments on its site.

People will still able to make payments on a one-time basis. Facebook is also replacing its own Credits currency with users' local currency. So U.S. users will pay in dollars and those in Japan will pay in yen.

Payments for virtual items, such as chips on "Zynga Poker," accounted for 17 percent of Facebook's revenue in the first quarter.
