51s Baseball Season Over In More Ways Than One?

Could the 51s trash cans be adding a splash of orange next year?

The Las Vegas 51s, AAA baseball affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, ended their 2012 season with a win in Colorado Monday leaving them in second place within their division, 6.5 games behind first, and out of the playoffs. At the end of each minor league baseball season, players pack up hoping not to return by way of starting the next year at a higher level. The 51s roster may, instead, get a full makeover this off-season.

The Toronto Blue Jays partnered up with Las Vegas just before the start of the 2008 season. A seemingly odd choice after Vegas' previous affiliations with closer located Los Angeles and San Diego and, by extension, their fan bases. With the Vegas Blue Jays agreement now expired, Toronto seems to be setting its eyes on Buffalo where the Bisons are seeking a new MLB partner.

One rant site suggests the 51s didn't help matters by tweeting their dissatisfaction after a series of trades by the big league team left the AAA roster a few holes short of a home run. The tweets in question seem to be from a 51s fan and former player but were retweeted by the 51s account:

Meh. If that actually got the Toronto brass riled up they need to loosen up. In any case, as promising as the Toronto farm was, we could only get so excited rooting for a parent organization thousands of miles away. And, a Canadian daddy, at that. So who may move in next year? The only candidate seems to be the New York Mets minor league team, formerly of Buffalo, in what may be another match of necessity given Vegas will be the only AAA site with an opening.

The Mets would be another long distance marriage but, possibly, more recognizable to the casual baseball fan. So while the look of baseball may be changing here in Las Vegas, it hasn't been called out and sent to the showers. And, after this season saw Vlad Guerrero stop on a comeback tour, could Las Vegas see the likes of David Cone, Dwight Gooden, and Darryl Strawberry next year? Heck, all are the same age or younger than Roger Clemens, last seen pitching in Sugarland, Texas. Double heck, toss Mookie Wilson and Keith Hernandez a 51s jersey next year, too. We're in. Did we just get off topic?

The schedule for the 2013 Las Vegas 51s, AAA affiliate of TBD, has already been announced. Fans of Major League Baseball's insert team here will be able to cheer their future starting Thursday, April 4 in Sacramento or at home against Colorado Springs on Friday, April 12.
