Standardized testing not an effective way to measure a students ...

For this assignment, you will be writing 1500 words in MLA format. This is not a research paper, but you will find in your exploration of your claim that you will need to back up your argument and find evidence for use in a counterargument. Therefore, it is expected that you will use between four and six credible sources to write this paper. References to these sources should be made internally (in the body of the paper) and in a works cited page. Your ability to use MLA formatting accurately will not give you points in this paper; rather, you will lose points if your paper is not in correct MLA format
You are to write a classical argument, the goal of which is truth-seeking. This means that your paper should be complex and consider your claim from a number of different angles. You should use rhetorical strategies (ethos, pathos, logos) in your own writing, and you should follow the structure outlined in class and in your textbook for effective classical arguments.

Your goal is to persuade the audience. In so doing, your treatment of the opposing position is critical and must be respectful. This is in line with the goals of a classical argument: not a fight, not a debate (no pro/con), and doesn?t polarize people. You advocate your position and consider the views of others. This is a process of inquiry.

Evaluation criteria:

Strength of thesis/claim and appropriate use of evidence (25%): Is your thesis surprising? Does it present an uncommon view? Is your evidence credible, and do you support your claims appropriately (STAR)? Do you use a variety of evidence to support your claim?

Treatment of opposing views (25%): Do you summarize the opposing views objectively? Do you react to the opposing views respectfully? Do you use a variety of strategies to react to opposing views?

Structure (25%): Do you follow the structure outlined in class and in your textbook for a classical argument? Do you organize your thoughts hierarchically (thesis, supporting points, sub points, particulars)?

Use of rhetorical strategies (25%) How effectively do you make use of pathos, logos, and ethos?
